MARRIED LIFE
DATE OF MARRIAGE: October 11, 1954
PLACE OF MARRIAGE: Our Lady of Sorrows Church, F.B. Harrison Street, Pasay City,Philippines
Cory didn’t finish studying law and she married Benigno ‘’Ninoy’’ Aquino Jr. After several months of being together, the couple produced 5 children. Four girls and a boy. Aquino had some difficulties adjusting to provincial life when she and Ninoy moved to Concepcion, Tarlac in 1955. After the latter she was elected the town's mayor at the age of 22.
During her husband's political career, Aquino remained a housewife who helped raise their children and played hostess to her spouse's political allies who would frequent their Quezon City.
Because of Marcos's aim to have his 3rd term he declared the Philippines to be Martial Law. Ninoy, his chief nemesis, was detained hours before the state of emergency was announced. Weeks earlier, Ninoy exposed Marcos’s plan to impose martial law, which he said was meant to keep Marcos in power indefinitely and suggested to Cory that she and their children should leave for Australia.
Cory and the children were shocked when they finally saw Ninoy. He had lost weight since they saw him only two months before. This was the only time Cory Aquino had seen her husband break down and lose his confidence.
Ninoy was given the chance to live in Boston with his wife, Cory, and their children.
Back to her preferred role as wife and mother, Cory glowed with happiness but the blissful years did not last, the Philippines was never far from Ninoy’s thoughts so he decided to return in 1983, despite warnings from the government that it could not guarantee his safety.
Marcos was ailing, the economy was in shambles, and the extravagant and vindictive Imelda looked set to take over. Ninoy was assassinated at the tarmac of the Manila International Airport, now called as the "Ninoy Aquino International Airport", while under military guard. In Boston with the children, Cory was devastated but still remained strong.
