POST-PRESIDENCY
BRIEF DESCRIPTION
Corazon Aquino retired to private life, but still, she remained active in the Philippine political scene which she deemed as threats to the liberal traditions and democratic foundations of the country.
She also traveled abroad to give speeches and lectures on issues of democracy, development, human rights and women empowerment. Aquino also joined global leaders and democratic icons in urging the Government of Burma to unconditionally release Burmese democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi from detention, where she delivered a speech on behalf in the 1994 meeting of the UNESCO World Commission on Culture and Development in Manila. Aquino also joined the international community in mourning the death of Pope John Paul II. Aquino was also involved in several charitable activities and socio-economic initiatives. She set up in her husband's honor right after his brutal assassination in 1983. Aquino also supported the Gawad Kalinga social housing project for the poor and homeless. Aquino helped establish the PinoyME Foundation (a non-profit organization which aims to provide microfinancing programs and projects for the poor).
She was a lifelong member of the Council of Women World Leaders, an international organization of former and current female heads of state and government.

HER STRUGGLE WITH CANCER
Between Christmas 2007 and New Year 2008, Aquino experienced periodic fluctuations of blood pressure, difficulty in breathing, loss of appetite and remarkable loss of weight.
Some days after, her doctor confirmed that she had colorectal cancer to the Aquino family.
In the middle of March 2008, she confided the nature of her disease to a close friend, Priest Catalino Arevalo. She began to experience cancer symptoms before 2008, difficulty in breathing, persistent cough and loss of appetite. They also said that the March 19 result of Cory's biopsy said that the disease was primarily due to adenocarcinoma, where the cancer started on colon glands. Her spokesperson Deedee Sytangco said that her colon cancer is at stage four prior to discovery.
July 2009, Aquino was reported to be in a very serious condition and confined to Makati Medical Center due to loss of appetite and chronic baldness.
